    How Your Telehealth Visit Works

Your appointment may begin with an ABF Telehealth Medical Assistant or Care Coordinator. This team member may verify your information, collect your symptoms and questions, review your medication list, and prepare the visit for the licensed clinician.

Medical assistants do not independently diagnose conditions, interpret laboratory results, change medications, or authorize prescriptions. Medical decisions, lab interpretation, and prescription approvals are handled or authorized by an appropriately licensed clinician.

    What happens during the appointment?

    Step 1

    Check In

We confirm your identity, location, callback number, privacy, and reason for the visit.

    Step 2

    Review

A team member collects relevant symptoms, medications, allergies, home readings, and questions.

    Step 3

    Clinical Care

A licensed clinician reviews the information and provides the appropriate medical assessment or plan.

    Step 4

    Next Steps

You receive instructions about prescriptions, testing, referrals, monitoring, or follow-up care.

    Choose the Right Telehealth Experience

    Telephone Appointment

An ABF team member will call the telephone number listed in your patient record. Keep your phone nearby, make sure it is charged, and be prepared to answer calls from an unfamiliar number.

    • Confirm that ABF has your current telephone number.
    • Temporarily disable settings that block unfamiliar callers.
    • Be available beginning at your scheduled appointment time.
    • Choose a quiet and private place to speak.
    • Do not participate while driving.

    Zoom Video Appointment

Join your appointment using the Zoom link provided in your confirmation message. A video appointment may help the clinical team observe certain visible concerns, but it does not replace every type of physical examination.

    • Charge your phone, tablet, or computer.
    • Test your camera, microphone, speakers, and internet connection.
    • Open the appointment link five to ten minutes early.
    • Position yourself in a quiet, well-lit room.
    • Keep your telephone nearby in case the video connection fails.

ABF may continue a video appointment by telephone when appropriate. If the visit cannot be completed safely without video or an in-person examination, it may need to be rescheduled or converted to an office visit.

    Prepare for a Successful Appointment

Taking a few minutes to prepare can make your appointment faster, clearer, and more productive.

Recent home readings examples: Blood pressure, temperature, weight, heart rate, blood sugar, oxygen level, or other readings requested by the clinical team.

This checklist is stored only in your browser session. Do not enter medical details on this public page.

    Requesting a Medication Refill

A telehealth appointment does not guarantee that a prescription or refill will be approved. A licensed clinician must determine whether the medication is safe and appropriate.

    Have These Details Ready

    • Medication name
    • Medication strength
    • How often you take it
    • Reason the medication was prescribed
    • Remaining number of doses
    • Preferred pharmacy name and location
    • Any side effects or concerns
    • Any recent medication changes from another healthcare professional

Please do not wait until you have completely run out of medication to request a refill. Some medications require recent laboratory testing, vital signs, monitoring, or an in-person examination before they can be approved.

    Controlled-Medication Refills and Telehealth

Some controlled-medication refills cannot be completed solely through a telehealth appointment. Patients may first be required to complete in-person toxicology testing, sign or renew an agreement, or attend an office evaluation. Do not assume that every controlled medication can be prescribed through telehealth.

    Preparing to Discuss Lab Results

If your appointment concerns laboratory results, write down your questions before the call. A trained team member may collect your questions and relay clinician-approved information, but interpretation and treatment decisions must come from a licensed clinician.

What do these results mean for my health?

Is anything outside the expected range?

    Do I need additional testing?

Should I continue my current medications?

Are any treatment or lifestyle changes recommended?

When should my laboratory work be repeated?

What symptoms should cause me to contact ABF sooner?

    During Your Appointment

    What You Should Do

    • Answer questions completely and honestly.
    • Tell the team about new or worsening symptoms.
    • Report recent emergency-room, urgent-care, or specialist visits.
    • Mention medications started or changed by another provider.
    • Ask questions when instructions are unclear.
    • Write down important instructions and follow-up requirements.
    • Tell the team if another person is present.
    • Do not record the appointment unless everyone has agreed.

    What ABF Will Confirm

    • Your full name and date of birth
    • Your current physical location
    • Your callback number
    • Your privacy and ability to speak safely
    • Your consent to participate through telehealth
    • The names of other people participating
    • Your preferred pharmacy
    • Your medication allergies
    • The main reason for the appointment

A trusted caregiver, family member, interpreter, or support person may participate with the patient's permission. Their presence may be documented in the medical record.

Be Ready at Your Scheduled Time

Please be available beginning at your scheduled appointment time. The clinical team may occasionally experience a delay because of the needs of earlier patients or urgent clinical situations.

    Keep your phone nearby.

    Answer calls from unfamiliar numbers.

Check voicemail if you miss a call.

Follow ABF instructions to reconnect or reschedule.

Policy notice: ABF may make up to 2 call attempts, approximately 5 minutes apart. If the patient cannot be reached, the appointment may be considered missed and may need to be rescheduled. ABF's applicable cancellation, late-arrival, and no-show policies may apply.

When You May Need an Office Visit

Telehealth is convenient, but it is not appropriate for every healthcare need. ABF may recommend an in-person appointment when:

    A physical examination is necessary.
Reliable vital signs or testing are unavailable.
Symptoms cannot be evaluated safely by telephone or video.
Symptoms are unexplained, persistent, or worsening.
    Required medication monitoring is overdue.
A procedure, injection, specimen collection, or diagnostic test is needed.
The patient's identity, location, consent, or privacy cannot be confirmed.
The clinician determines that in-person care is medically necessary.

Being asked to come into the office does not mean your concern cannot be addressed. It means the clinical team needs additional information to care for you safely.

Telehealth Is Not an Emergency Service

Call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department if you are experiencing a potentially life-threatening condition.

    • Severe chest pain
    • Severe difficulty breathing
    • Signs of a stroke
    • Uncontrolled bleeding
    • Loss of consciousness
    • Severe allergic reaction
    • Seizure activity
    • Thoughts of harming yourself or another person

Any rapidly worsening or life-threatening symptom requires immediate emergency care.
